Good stories about food and life
“Poverty was repugnant to her; degradation took away two-thirds of her greatness. Milady was only a queen while among queens. The pleasure of satisfied pride was necessary to her domination. To command inferior beings was rather a humiliation than a pleasure for her.”
— The Three Musketeers, Alexandre Dumas
Rarely do I write a critical post. It’s not that I’m so optimistic, but rather that I was gifted with the ability to exercise a certain degree of diplomacy in most circumstances…except this one.
Part One: The Hunt
“Go through the back door and into the dark alley. Make a right and head toward the glowing light. You’ll see a door with snake coils on it. That’s the place.”
Um, yeah…because this is From Dusk Till Dawn and I’m George Clooney and he’s Quentin Tarantino and we’re walking into vampire headquarters. Right. My thoughts raced beneath a furrowed brow as my husband and I got directions to Bad Luck Bar – a fairly new and very opulent 1920’s inspired speakeasy in downtown Detroit.
“She wanted to die, but she also wanted to live in Paris.” — Madame Bovary, Gustave Flaubert
Not sure about the whole dying thing but I certainly would love to live in Paris! If Paris were a person, it would be a she - an exquisite she - a woman of effortless style, cultural awareness, and an ability to create sheer loveliness. She is clearly the esteemed patroness of the latest eatery in Detroit’s West Village - La Bohéme. This cutie pie of a café is perfect for getting my French fix until Madame Paris and I are officially besties.
“There is nothing in the world so irresistibly contagious as laughter and good humor.” — Charles Dickens
Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays, everyone! Check out the full gallery of photos from our Holiday Pancakes and Pajamas event. We had such a wonderful time. We began the morning drinking hot cocoa and crafting festive notes to surprise loved ones and perfect strangers alike just to spread a little holiday cheer. The competition got fierce as we tested our holiday movie knowledge with trivia questions and even a few rounds of charades. We watched Angela Foster of Coffee and (____) make some truly special pancakes, made vegan and with organic ingredients. We topped it all off with a pancake breakfast, some festive Christmosas (champagne and sparkling apple cider, garnished with cranberries, green apples, green grapes and pomegranate seeds), and plenty of merriment! If you weren't able to attend, take a peek at Coffee and (_____)'s signature pancake recipe below and try them out yourself. Yums! Wishing you all a beautiful holiday season!

“But I don’t want comfort. I want God, I want poetry, I want real danger, I want freedom, I want goodness. I want sin.” — Aldous Huxley, Brave New World
We got in! I coveted an invitation to Le Diner en Blanc like I do food on my husband’s plate. Every story raced through my mind in glittering detail – secret locations, beautifully decorated tables, fierce attire, new friends and, of course, the ethereal white. What’s more, I was going across the country to attend Seattle’s inaugural event.
“Ladiez is pimps too…gon’ brush your shoulders off.” — Jay Z
Not my usual classic quote intro but necessary, as it was the first thing I saw when I entered the foyer of Lady of the House. I’m going to like this place, I thought for the second time. I first had the impression as my husband pulled into the parking lot and I realized we were across the street from Corktown’s FOLK Detroit (one of my favorite brunch spots) but now the feeling was palpable. Another two steps and I ran into the proprietor of Antietam as he was walking out. “Try the roasted carrots, he urged.” Yep, definitely going to like this place.
